1. Thionia rubrocostata (Spinola, 1839) taxonomy

Thionia rubrocostata (Spinola, 1839) is currently considered as a valid taxon of species rank in the family Issidae Spinola, 1839 of the Fulgoromorpha. This species was first described by Spinola M. in 1839 in the following paper: Essai sur les Fulgorelles, sous-tribu de la tribu des Cicadaires, ordre des Rhyngotes. (Suite). Annales de la Société Entomologique de France. Paris, 8: 339-454.

It is currently classified in order Hemiptera Linné, 1758, suborder Fulgoromorpha Evans, 1946, superfamily Fulgoroidea Latreille, 1807, family Issidae Spinola, 1839, subfamily Thioniinae Melichar, 1906, tribe Thioniini Melichar, 1906, subtribe Thioniina Melichar, 1906, genus Thionia Stål, 1859.

Thionia rubrocostata is an extant taxon.

2. Thionia rubrocostata (Spinola, 1839) geographical distribution and bioregions

According to the geographical TDWG standard (2001), Thionia rubrocostata (Spinola, 1839) are known from the Neotropical biogeographical region as defined by Wallace (1876). More precisely, they are distributed in the South American zoogeographic region as defined by Holt (2013). Figures 1 and 2 display dynamic graphs showcasing the longitudinal and latitudinal profiles of Thionia rubrocostata (Spinola, 1839) arround the across the globe according to their species richness. A scroll on the histogram bars displays the species richness of the corresponding regions.

3. Thionia rubrocostata (Spinola, 1839) biological interactions

As all planthoppers, Thionia rubrocostata (Spinola, 1839) are obligatory phytophagous terrestrial insects.
