This species was first described by Synave H. in 1956 in the following paper: Contribution à l'étude des Issidae Africains (Homoptera - Fulgoroidea). Bulletin de l'Institut Royal des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique, 32(57) : 1-22.

It is currently classified in order Hemiptera Linné, 1758, suborder Fulgoromorpha Evans, 1946, superfamily Fulgoroidea Latreille, 1807, family Tropiduchidae Stål, 1866, subfamily Elicinae Melichar, 1915, tribe Elicini Melichar, 1915, genus Gamergomorphus Melichar, 1906.

Gamergomorphus steynsburgensis is an extant taxon.
